FROM PHYSIOLOGY TO PATHOLOGY – BEYOND DENTISTRY: SLEEP, PAIN, TMJ

The physiopathology of the stomatognathic system has always been matter of debate within the several communities of dental practitioners. In particular, whilst purely mechanical approaches to the study of the relationship between the various components (i.e, the TMJ, jaw muscles, dental occlusion) still survive within a minority of “gnathologically-oriented” orthodontic or prosthodontic communities, an integration with knowledge on the neurological aspects is clearly emerging as the best available option to appraise stomatognathic physiology. In addition to that, conditions of interest for the dentist are emerging from studies on the sleep architecture.
Within these premises, the 5th International Congress of The Italian Study Group on Craniomandibular Disorders (GSID) is a wonderful opportunity to get deeper into the topics of dental sleep medicine, orofacial pain and temporomandibular joint physiopathology. This year, the event is going to be a journey beyond dentistry, through the medical perspectives that are needed for a proper evaluation and management of those conditions.
Gilles Lavigne, Peter Svensson and Daniele Manfredini will get participants through these issues by taking advantage of the classical interactive GSID STEP approach to continued education:
